An unstoppable rise in the region
Cyclotourism has become one of the most attractive activities for visitors to Madrid, with a remarkable growth of 17% since 2023. This trend has not only captured the attention of locals but also international tourists seeking to explore the natural and cultural beauty of the region on two wheels.
According to the Cyclotourism Observatory, more and more people from countries such as France, the United Kingdom, Argentina, and even China, are choosing to discover Madrid through cyclotourism. Routes like the Vía Verde de Tajuña, the Camino de Santiago in Madrid, and the trails through the Sierra de Guadarrama offer unique experiences that combine sport, nature, and culture.
As this activity gains popularity, there is also a significant increase in female participation. In three years, the percentage of female cyclists has risen from 11% to the current 16.3%. Additionally, more families are joining this adventure; between 5% and 10% of the total cyclotourists are minors accompanying their parents on these journeys.
Despite the growth in diversity, the predominant profile remains male and young. Most prefer road or mountain bikes for medium to long distances. However, this landscape is slowly changing thanks to initiatives that promote greater inclusion within the sport.
It is not just a recreational activity; cyclotourism also has a positive impact on local economies. Around 46.5% of cyclists start their route from nearby areas, while 23.3% use public transport to reach the starting point. This significantly contributes to the sustainable economic development of the rural areas they visit.
