A Dos de Mayo marked by political division
The traditional Dos de Mayo in Madrid has been overshadowed by the crisis affecting Más Madrid, the main opposition party in the region. For the second consecutive year, the celebration will not feature representation from the central Government, reflecting the growing tensions between Puerta del Sol and Moncloa. This year, the regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, will preside over the event at the Real Casa de Correos, in front of a select audience of approximately 600 guests, excluding members of the Government.
As next year's elections approach, the situation within Más Madrid has become critical. Mónica García's recent announcement of her intention to run again as a candidate has generated friction with Emilio Delgado, who also aspires to lead the party. This rivalry has led to a complete breakdown in their communications and intensified mutual attacks between their supporters.
Recent polls reflect a discouraging outlook for Más Madrid. A survey conducted by EL MUNDO indicates that only 40% of voters support Mónica García as a candidate, while 30% prefer Emilio Delgado and 25% opt for Manuela Bergerot. This fragmentation could cost them the opposition leadership against the PSOE if elections were held today.
Despite the perceived boycott from the PSOE towards Ayuso, the socialists have decided to organise their own celebration at the Rosaleda in Parque del Oeste. This parallel event further emphasises the current political divisions. Additionally, Vox faces its own internal challenges; Javier Ortega Smith has been expelled following a dispute with Santiago Abascal, adding another layer of complexity to the Madrid political landscape.
Despite the political tensions, the event will also serve to honour various prominent figures. Among this year's awardees are personalities such as Enrique Cerezo, president of Atlético de Madrid; Carlos Sainz Jr., Formula 1 driver; and Audrey Pascual, Paralympic skier. These recognitions aim to highlight significant achievements in different fields while the political climate remains tumultuous.
As the holiday approaches, authorities are attentive to weather conditions. There are concerns about possible rain that could affect the normal development of the event scheduled to begin at 10:00 hours with a floral tribute to the Heroes of Dos de Mayo.
