Marie-Louise Eta has made history by becoming the first woman to manage a men's team in the Bundesliga, after being appointed head coach of Union Berlin. This appointment comes at a critical time for the club, which is looking to secure its place in the league after a run of disappointing results.
The decision to hand the reins of the team to Eta came after the previous coach, Steffen Baumgart, was dismissed following a series of three winless matches. Union Berlin currently sits in eleventh place in the table, with 32 points, just seven above the relegation zone. The situation is tense, and every point counts to avoid dropping to the second division.
In her first speech as head coach, Marie-Louise expressed her excitement about taking on this challenge. “I am delighted that the club has entrusted me with this challenging task,” she stated. The former footballer already has experience within the club, having served as an assistant coach and then technical director of the under-19 team since March 2025.
Throughout her career, Eta has broken significant barriers. In 2023, she became the first female assistant in a men's team within the Bundesliga and also made history by being part of the coaching staff during a men's Champions League match. Her appointment not only represents a personal advancement for her but also symbolizes a cultural shift within German football.
The sporting director of Union Berlin, Horst Heldt, highlighted the urgent need to accumulate points to ensure survival in the league. “We have had an enormously disappointing second half of the season so far,” Heldt acknowledged. With only two wins in fourteen matches since the winter break, the club is hopeful that under Eta's leadership, they can reverse this negative trend.
Despite the challenge ahead, Marie-Louise Eta remains optimistic about the team's prospects: “One of Union's strengths has always been coming together in difficult situations.” With five matchdays remaining in the season and a clear mission ahead, all eyes will be on her as she attempts to guide Union Berlin towards the expected salvation.
