A refreshing measure for fans
In an announcement that has surprised many, Daniel Noboa, president of Ecuador, has decided to temporarily eliminate the Special Consumption Tax (ICE) on moderate beverages, including beer. This decision is part of the celebration of the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. During an event held in a coastal town of the country, Noboa stated that this measure aims to provide an "extra support" to Ecuadorian fans.
With this tax removal, it is expected that the price of beer will decrease by more than 20%, allowing citizens to enjoy the matches with a cold drink in hand. "Each of you will be able to enjoy the World Cup in the best way," Noboa expressed while proudly wearing a national team jersey.
Not only beer will benefit from this measure; other beverages such as table wines, sparkling wines, and some fermented liquors will also see their prices reduced. However, the government has not yet specified when this temporary tax removal will take effect.
Noboa highlighted that a football atmosphere is already palpable in Ecuador: "Everyone is already thinking more about football than anything else," he commented. This enthusiasm is characteristic of a country where watching matches with friends and family is an integral part of social culture.
Ecuador will debut in the World Cup facing Ivory Coast on June 15 at 1:00 PM Spanish time in Philadelphia. This match will coincide with an official trip by President Noboa to the United States. Subsequently, the Ecuadorian team will compete against Curacao and Germany during its participation in this international tournament.
