An unexpected farewell
The 2026 World Cup will mark a milestone in the history of Uruguayan football, but not for the expected victories, rather for the absence of one of its greatest idols: Luis Suárez. This Sunday, the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) revealed the list of players called up for the tournament, and the striker's name was not among them, thus closing a significant chapter in his career.
The head coach Marcelo Bielsa, tasked with guiding the Celeste team in this World Cup, has opted for a new generation. Among his selections are forwards Darwin Núñez, Rodrigo Aguirre, and Federico Viñas, who will be responsible for leading the Uruguayan attack in a tough group that includes Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Cape Verde.
Suárez had hinted at his desire to return to the national team after officially retiring in September 2024. At that time, he expressed that he would never refuse a call if he was needed. However, after a series of tensions with Bielsa and a complicated atmosphere within the squad, his return did not materialise.
Throughout his international career, Suárez has been a fundamental pillar for Uruguay. With 69 goals in 143 matches, he is the country's all-time top scorer and has participated in four World Cups: South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018, and Qatar 2022. His performances have left a mark; from his three goals in South Africa to his memorable displays against England and Italy in Brazil.
Starting next June, Luis Suárez will watch as other players continue to represent Uruguay on the world stage. Although he will no longer be present as an active player, his legacy will endure among fans and future generations who will continue to remember his feats on the field.
