An anticipated change at the US Open
The US Open, one of the most prestigious tournaments on the tennis circuit, has decided to implement a new format for mixed doubles that promises to attract even more attention from the public and players. This change, which will take effect in 2026, comes after the success achieved in the previous edition, where the format received a warm welcome from the players.
Instead of the traditional system allowing 16 pairs to compete, this year will introduce a qualifying round with eight new pairs. Of these, only two will have the opportunity to join the other 16 already registered. This modification aims to increase competitiveness and provide opportunities for new talents in the world of tennis.
The qualifying round will take place the week before the main draw starts, coinciding with the event known as Fashion Week. This approach not only adds an exciting element to the tournament but also aligns it with other important cultural events in New York.
Unlike previous years, where matches were held on various courts, this edition will see the main draw of mixed doubles taking place exclusively on the two most iconic courts: Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong. Additionally, all matches scheduled at the Louis Armstrong Stadium will be free and open to the public, a strategy aimed at encouraging attendance and revitalising this format that had fallen out of favour.
As the tournament date approaches, prominent figures like Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu have left their mark in past editions. The inclusion of these changes aims not only to attract more spectators but also to elevate the profile of mixed doubles within the global tennis landscape. With great duos competing and a renewed format, expectations are high for this Grand Slam.
