A significant change in university funding
The Community of Madrid has taken a decisive step towards strengthening its educational system by approving a new funding model for its six public universities. This agreement, formalised in the Government Council, will allocate approximately €14.8 billion until 2031, thus ensuring a solid foundation for academic and scientific development in the region.
The Minister of Education, Science and Universities, Mercedes Zarzalejo, highlighted that this initiative will not only provide universities with multi-year funding, but will also allow them to plan their growth and make necessary investments. With an annual average of €2.465.1 million, educational institutions will be able to improve their services and modernise their infrastructures.
The new model includes an equitable but differentiated distribution among universities. The Complutense University, for example, will receive the largest share of the budget with over €2.914 million. It is followed by other institutions such as the Polytechnic and the Autonomous University, which will also see their resources increased to meet current challenges.
In addition to basic funding, several extraordinary funds have been created to address particular situations. These include a fund to correct financial imbalances and another aimed at financing innovative projects that enhance academic competitiveness.
This model not only seeks to improve the current financial situation; it is part of a broader strategy called Community of Madrid University Region. This initiative aims to consolidate Madrid as an international benchmark in higher education through various measures, including the creation of the Lope de Vega Campus (c-LoVe), focused on promoting Spanish as a foreign language.
Through the ‘Madrid Campus 365‘ programme, cultural and sporting activities will be offered during the summer months, ensuring that students have continuous access to training opportunities even outside the traditional academic period. This effort is designed to attract both local and international students.
