A step towards educational modernisation
The Community of Madrid has taken an important step in the educational field by announcing a new plan that will allow private education teachers to enjoy a more flexible partial retirement. This initiative, which will begin to be implemented in the 2026/27 academic year, aims to address a long-standing demand from the teaching sector and improve the working conditions of educators.
The Madrid Government Council will present a report on Wednesday regarding the agreement that will be signed with employer organisations and unions. This agreement will allow teachers to voluntarily reduce their working hours significantly during the two years prior to their retirement. Specifically, teachers will be able to go from working 25 hours a week to just 7 hours, while still maintaining 100% of their contributions to Social Security.
This programme is designed to benefit more than 500 teachers who meet certain requirements, such as having at least six years of experience at their educational institution. Additionally, there is the possibility of concentrating this reduction in hours as long as there is an agreement with the school and the proper functioning of the institution is guaranteed.
The positive impact is not limited to current teachers. According to estimates from the regional government, this measure will facilitate the incorporation of new educators into private schools. Replacement contracts will be primarily aimed at unemployed individuals and will be full-time indefinite contracts, thus ensuring job stability for new teachers for at least two years following the partial retirement of the replaced teacher.
This plan not only represents an improvement in working conditions for older teachers but also responds to the urgent need to rejuvenate the teaching staff in Madrid. Education is a fundamental pillar for social and economic development, and ensuring that there are enough qualified professionals is essential to maintain high educational standards.
