A tense confrontation

The referee Kovacs, who was in charge of officiating the match, deemed that the ball was not in play when Musso initiated the play. This decision generated discontent within the FC Barcelona ranks.
Hansi Flick, Barcelona's coach, did not hide his frustration after the match. In his statements, he said: "I can't believe it. It's unfair but it's football, we have to accept it." Flick also hinted that VAR had favoured Atletico throughout the match, which further fueled the flames of debate.
On the other hand, the rojiblanco coach defended the referee's decision, arguing that if both he and Pubill interpreted the play that way, it was simply a matter of common sense. In his words: "If Marc interpreted what he interpreted and the referee did the same, it's just common sense of the game."
Despite the uproar generated by this specific action, Juan Musso, Atletico's goalkeeper, urged the media to focus on the overall performance of the team and not just on isolated incidents. "If we're going to summarise the match in that play... Let's talk about the match in general," Musso commented. He also added: "Let's stop messing around. It's a play that has no significance."
Giuliano Simeone, son of coach Diego Simeone and one of the protagonists in this verbal clash with journalists, also expressed criticism regarding questions about the controversial action. His response was clear: "Is Marc taking it out? He touches it with his hand to take it out... We never take it out with Juan." With this, he made his point clear about how plays develop within the colchonero team.
As European competitions progress and clashes between these football giants intensify, it remains to be seen whether this verbal war between coaches and teams will continue or if they will finally find common ground to discuss their differences without resorting to mutual accusations.
