A Boost for Sustainable Mobility in Madrid
The City Council of Madrid has taken a significant step towards improving urban mobility by announcing an expansion of the electric bicycle system Bicimad. This initiative, expected to be completed by May 2025, will include the addition of 245 new bicycles and up to twenty additional stations distributed across six districts of the capital.
Since its creation in 2014, Bicimad has experienced remarkable growth, rising from 3 million to over 13.7 million users. This increase reflects not only the interest in sustainable transport alternatives but also the success of the programme in promoting daily bicycle use. So far this year, over 2.5 million trips have been recorded, representing a 20% increase compared to the previous year.
The new stations will be strategically located to maximise their impact. Barajas will have a station on Tintín and Milú street; Hortaleza will see several additions on Manuel Chaves Nogales and Princesa de Éboli; while Moncloa-Aravaca will have several new bases along key avenues. Additionally, Puente de Vallecas and Villaverde will also receive new facilities. This expansion aims not only to reinforce areas already covered by Bicimad but also to bring the service to new neighbourhoods where it is not yet present.
An exciting part of the announcement is the City Council's intention to extend Bicimad beyond the municipal boundary towards Pozuelo. Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida has mentioned that this collaboration could materialise next summer. The idea is to facilitate connections between nearby towns through an efficient and accessible system.
The total investment allocated for this expansion amounts to approximately 1.4 million euros, with a significant portion coming from the Sustainable Tourism Plans funded by NextGenerationEU European funds. This financial backing underscores the local government's commitment to initiatives that promote a more eco-friendly lifestyle.
As Madrid moves towards its ambitious goal of becoming a more sustainable city, Bicimad stands as an exemplary model within the European urban landscape. With record figures in both usage and infrastructure, the system is poised to continue growing and innovating. The recent introduction also includes temporary virtual stations to adapt to areas with high demand or ongoing works.
