A significant advance for the residents of Numancia
Starting this Monday, residents of the Numancia neighbourhood in Vallecas will enjoy a notable improvement in their access to the healthcare system. The Municipal Transport Company (EMT) has extended line 56, which will now directly connect this neighbourhood with the Gregorio Marañón hospital. This modification responds to a long-standing demand from the local community, which had requested a more efficient connection to their reference hospital for years.
The delegate for Urbanism, Environment and Mobility, Borja Carabante, highlighted that this extension will not only facilitate access to essential medical services but will also significantly reduce travel times and the need for multiple transfers. According to Carabante, “practically all the lines we extend are community demands,” underscoring the City Council's commitment to improving the quality of public transport in Madrid.
Line 56, now called ‘Diego de León-Numancia’, will include a total of nine new intermediate stops. This will allow users to access not only the Gregorio Marañón hospital and the Beata María Ana hospital but also other key points such as Manuel Becerra square and the Goya shopping area. The route will extend from the Doctor Esquerdo axis to Francisco Silvela and Diego de León.
Juan Carlos Ortega, president of a community association in the district, expressed his satisfaction with this news: “We need it to go to the doctor; there are many elderly people in the neighbourhood, and until now it was like a trek in the desert.” With this new direct connection, many residents will be able to avoid the complications associated with previous transfers.
Not only Numancia benefits; other areas will also see significant improvements. This same Monday, extensions have begun on the night lines N5 (Cibeles-Colonia Fin de Semana) and other routes in the Rejas (San Blas-Canillejas) and Butarque (Villaverde) neighbourhoods. These modifications aim to increase public transport coverage and offer greater convenience to users.
In Butarque, three lines will see their routes increased: lines 85 (Atocha Station-Butarque), 123 (Legazpi-Butarque) and N12 (Cibeles-Butarque). The terminals will be relocated to further improve accessibility within the neighbourhood.
The EMT continues to work to strengthen its network and respond to the specific needs of each neighbourhood. With these initiatives, the aim is not only to optimise the time citizens spend on their daily commutes but also to ensure more equitable access to fundamental services such as medical care.
