An initiative that transforms mobility in Madrid
The City Council of Madrid has decided to implement a new day of free public transport, offering citizens the opportunity to travel at no cost on EMT buses and the electric bicycle service Bicimad. This measure will take place on 7th and 8th April, right after the Easter holiday period.
The offer will be available from midnight on Tuesday 7th until 11:59 PM on Wednesday 8th. Users wishing to take advantage of this opportunity must validate their usual transport ticket. Those without a ticket can receive a free single ticket directly from the driver. However, it is important to note that this initiative will not apply to the Airport Express line.
Not only will buses be included in this special day; the Bicimad service will offer free rides for a maximum of 30 minutes. This represents an excellent opportunity to promote the use of sustainable and healthy transport options among Madrileños.
Since its implementation, free days have had a significant impact, reaching over 82.70 million travellers in a total of 74 days spread across 30 different periods. The City Council has highlighted that these initiatives have managed to attract over 15.77 million users who normally do not use public transport.
Although this measure was initially conceived as a response to the impact caused by Storm Filomena, it has become an annual tradition. Each year, similar days are organised coinciding with important events such as the return to school in September, Black Friday or the Christmas festivities. This strategy aims not only to alleviate transport costs for citizens but also to encourage a shift towards more sustainable options.
