A week of free mobility in Madrid
On the occasion of the anticipated visit of the Pope, Madrid will implement an exceptional mobility plan from 3 to 9 June. During this week, citizens and visitors will be able to enjoy free public transport on EMT buses and the Bicimad service, thus facilitating movement around the city for the numerous pilgrims expected to arrive for the event.
On 6 and 7 June, when a higher influx is anticipated, up to 184 additional buses will be incorporated, representing an approximate increase of 25% compared to the usual service. This measure aims to ensure that all attendees can travel without inconvenience to the various scheduled activities.
Not only will public transport be reinforced; all taxi licenses will also be allowed to operate during those days, including those that normally rest. This aims to increase the availability of surface vehicles and further facilitate access to the areas where the events will take place.
As the key dates approach, traffic cuts have already begun to be implemented in strategic areas such as Cibeles and Plaza de Lima. The City Council has urged citizens to stay tuned to their website, madrid.es, where updated information on cuts, diversions, and recommended alternative routes will be published to avoid congestion.
Since the impact on mobility will not be limited only to the central days of the event, but will begin earlier and continue afterwards due to the setup and dismantling of infrastructures, local authorities recommend planning any travel in advance. It is expected that even after the event, on 8 and 9 June, there will still be significant activity in the affected areas before Madrid returns to its usual pace.
