An event that will transform mobility in Madrid
The Visit of Pope Leo XIV to Madrid, scheduled for next June, will bring with it a mobility plan that will significantly alter traffic in the Spanish capital. From June 4 at 24:00 hours, citizens must be prepared for a series of road closures and restrictions that will affect both residents and visitors.
The Madrid City Council has launched an interactive map that allows citizens to check how these changes will affect them. This resource is essential for those planning to travel by private vehicle, as it provides detailed information about the streets and areas that will be closed to traffic. It is recommended to enter the exact address on the municipal platform before any trip.
One of the main areas of restriction will be around the Plaza de Lima. From midnight on June 4, the central lanes of the Paseo de la Castellana will be closed, from Plaza de Cuzco to Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz. Additionally, restricted access will be implemented on adjacent streets such as General Perón, where only authorised vehicles will be allowed to pass.
Furthermore, the perimeter will progressively expand over the following days, also affecting key areas such as Cibeles, where motorised access to the Paseo del Prado will be prohibited.
Not only will the main roads see alterations; there will also be significant impacts on the public transport system. The BiciMAD service will temporarily suspend more than thirty stations from June 5 to June 9. This includes strategic stops near Metro Retiro and Puerta Alcalá.
Additionally, regular taxi stops will also be cancelled during this critical period. Users will need to pay attention to the new locations designated by the City Council to avoid inconveniences.
Given the magnitude of the religious event, it is crucial for both Madrileños and visitors to plan their journeys in advance.
