A call to action for sustainable mobility
The political party Más Madrid launched a proposal on Tuesday that could change the course of mobility in the Henares corridor. In a context where traffic congestion has become a daily problem, representatives of this group have requested to delay the implementation of the Bus-VAO lane on the A-2, initially scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.
María Acín, deputy and spokesperson on Transport issues, emphasized that it is essential to have a coordinated mobility strategy among the different administrations involved: the Community of Madrid, the municipalities in the corridor, and the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT). According to Acín, this plan must include significant improvements in public transport to cater to the thousands of users who transit through this area daily.
Among the specific proposals presented by Más Madrid are shuttle buses between Alcalá de Henares and Avenida de América, with optimized frequencies during peak hours. Additionally, they suggest temporarily eliminating tolls on the R-2 and R-3 motorways while the initial phases of the VAO bus are implemented. They also advocate for creating new intercity lines that connect the Henares corridor directly with other areas to the north without needing to pass through the capital.
Despite acknowledging the Bus-VAO lane as a necessary infrastructure to promote more efficient and sustainable mobility, Acín warned about the risks associated with its premature implementation. “We fear it could lead to more congestion on a road that is already congested every morning,” she stated. The deputy also announced that she would raise questions with the regional government about their plans to strengthen public transport on this important traffic artery.
As an additional effort, Más Madrid plans to present municipal motions in several municipalities such as Alcalá de Henares, Torrejón de Ardoz, and San Fernando de Henares. The aim is to prevent the activation of the VAO bus from becoming a new source of frustration and congestion for thousands of citizens.
As the scheduled date for launching this reserved lane for high-occupancy vehicles approaches, Más Madrid emphasizes the urgent need to strengthen the frequencies and capacities of intercity transport. Without these adequate measures, they warn of the imminent risk of generating what they describe as “a perfect storm” that could further exacerbate existing traffic jams.
