A determined mayor
José Luis Martínez-Almeida, the current mayor of Madrid, has made official his intention to run again as the candidate for the Popular Party in the 2027 municipal elections. After a period of personal reflection, marked by his recent fatherhood, Almeida has declared that he feels energised and motivated to continue leading the Spanish capital.
In recent months, Almeida had kept his decision regarding a possible re-election in suspense. In September 2025, he had already hinted that if the elections were held at that time, he would be ready to run. However, the mayor wanted to ensure that he had the enthusiasm and strength necessary to take on the challenge of governing Madrid once again.
Throughout this time, the opposition has seized the opportunity to question the mayor about his future plans. In a recent debate on the State of the City, Reyes Maroto, the PSOE spokesperson in the City Council, urged him to clarify whether he would run again. Almeida chose not to respond directly to this question and criticised Maroto for focusing more on his political future than on the real problems facing Madrid residents.
Despite the tense atmosphere generated by these constant questions, Almeida has found a new drive. In an ironic tone, he mentioned that hearing Maroto suggest that his possible departure would be an “opportunity for the left” had given him an additional “boost of energy” to seriously consider his candidacy.
As the electoral cycle approaches, Almeida reaffirms his commitment to Madrid and assures that he has many projects in mind to improve the city. “It is definitely worth continuing to work for all Madrilenians,” he stated during a recent event where he participated in the presentation of commemorative activities for the 40th anniversary of FAD Juventud.
With this official confirmation and renewed energy, José Luis Martínez-Almeida prepares to face the electoral challenge of next year with determination. The race towards the municipal elections promises to be intense and full of surprises as political parties begin to define their strategies and candidates.
