The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has denied that the attic acquired in Chamberí is for her personal use. At a press conference held after a meeting with mayors affected by a recent fire in the Sierra Oeste, Ayuso responded to questions about the purchase made by Planifica Madrid, a company dependent on her department. According to her statements, the property will be used as an office due to ongoing works at the regional government headquarters.
Ayuso emphasized that if she had wanted to buy a home for herself, she would have done so years ago. "If I had wanted to have a home for myself, it would take me a little while: seven years," she stated. This declaration aims to distance herself from accusations suggesting a personal interest in the attic.
The president also mentioned that her place of residence is being confused with the space designated for work. "This is a topic I have no idea about because it is not my responsibility to know about the purchase of this attic," she assured, referring to Planifica Madrid and its usual function of buying and selling properties.
Regarding the decision to put the attic up for sale, Ayuso argued that it is currently unnecessary since the Casa de Correos remains operational. "It would not make sense to spend or use it for another issue when we have a need like the one we have," she justified her stance on making use of available resources to address other priorities.
The political context adds tension to this situation. The president has been the subject of criticism and speculation regarding her real estate decisions coinciding with the sale of another property where she resides with her partner. In this regard, Ayuso commented: "Points are being connected trying to cause harm when two circumstances have occurred at the same time."
Despite the media uproar and insinuations about her personal intentions, Ayuso defended her daily life, stating that it would be unwise to seek a new home at this political moment. "I cannot hide or live in a bunker; I have neighbours and I lead a normal life," she concluded.
