A Power Struggle in the Heart of Cibeles
The tension within the Vox municipal group in the Madrid City Council has reached unsustainable levels, evident during the last Plenary session. In a scene that seems straight out of a play, Javier Ortega Smith and Arantxa Cabello are vying for the title of legitimate spokesperson, while the presidency of the Plenary observes cautiously.
Although Ortega Smith is still officially recognised as spokesperson by the president of the Plenary, Borja Fanjul, Cabello has not remained silent. During her speech, she asserted emphatically: “I am the legitimate spokesperson of the Vox municipal group.” This direct challenge to the established authority has created a tense and confusing atmosphere within the party.
The response to this statement was swift. The councillor of the Popular Party, Jaime González Taboada, intervened to remind Cabello that her stance was inappropriate and that Ortega Smith remained the recognised spokesperson. “You are not the spokesperson, neither legitimate nor in any way,” Taboada shot back, making it clear that the internal divisions are affecting not only Vox but also the overall functioning of the Plenary.
Not only words witnessed this fracture; the votes also reflected the division. While Cabello and Fernando Martínez Vidal voted together, the rest of the municipal group aligned with Ortega Smith. This separation has led to a situation where members of the same party seem more divided than ever.
Despite their internal differences, both factions agree on their opposition to the Low Emission Zones (ZBE) implemented by the municipal government. Cabello announced that Vox had filed a contentious-administrative appeal against this new ordinance and stated that their aim is to defend their rights as councillors against what they consider unjust decisions.
As this internal conflict progresses with no apparent resolution, many are wondering what the political future of Vox in Madrid will be. The lack of unity could weaken their position against other political parties and affect their ability to influence key decisions for the city.
