A new voice for Madrid

Reyes Maroto, current spokesperson for the PSOE municipal group in the Madrid City Council, has confirmed her intention to run in the party primaries with the aim of becoming the socialist candidate for mayor in the 2027 municipal elections. At an event held near the iconic Teatro Real, Maroto highlighted her experience and knowledge gained during her three years leading the municipal group.

The former minister has not hesitated to express her desire for Madrid residents to experience a change of direction. According to her, “citizens deserve a new government that prioritises the well-being of the social majority and not just the interests of a few.” This message resonates strongly in a context where many citizens feel their needs have been neglected by the current municipal government led by the Popular Party.

Maroto has presented her candidacy as part of what she calls the Agenda for Change, a proposal that seeks to offer concrete alternatives to the policies implemented by José Luis Martínez-Almeida. The socialist leader believes that current policies are “outdated” and represent a wrong direction, which justifies her decision to compete for the mayoralty.

Throughout her statements, Maroto emphasised her commitment to building a political project that connects with the everyday problems faced by citizens. “I am convinced that the work done over these years will allow us to form a solid team within the PSOE, capable of empathising with the real needs of Madrid,” she stated. Her focus is on listening to and addressing the most urgent concerns of Madrid residents.

This is not the first time Maroto has expressed her interest in leading the PSOE in Madrid; since the beginning of the year, she has made it clear that she wishes to compete for this position. Despite speculation about other possible candidates, such as Minister Félix Bolaños, she remains steadfast in her decision and trusts she will have the necessary support within the party to carry her candidacy forward.

As the primaries approach, Reyes Maroto seems ready to fight not only for a candidacy but also to transform local politics towards a more inclusive and representative direction. With this clear objective, she hopes to connect deeply with Madrid voters and offer them a viable alternative to the current municipal government.
