A Slam Door on Collaboration
The Community of Madrid has decided not to participate in a crucial meeting called by the Government delegate, Francisco Martín Aguirre, to address the growing insecurity in the San Blas-Canillejas district. The Minister of Presidency, Justice and Local Administration, Miguel Ángel García Martín, has sent a strong letter rejecting the invitation, creating a climate of political and social tension.
Unlike the stance taken by the regional government led by Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the Madrid City Council, under the direction of José Luis Martínez-Almeida, will attend the meeting. However, their participation does not equate to agreement; the municipal team has openly criticised the Government delegate for what they consider an attempt to evade responsibilities regarding security.
The refusal to participate occurs in an alarming context. Insecurity has reached critical levels in San Blas-Canillejas, especially following the recent murder of a 20-year-old in Parque Paraíso, an incident that has highlighted issues related to drug trafficking and associated violence. This tragic event has intensified concerns among residents and local authorities.
In his letter, García Martín expresses his surprise at what he describes as a “unilateral” call on a matter that should be treated with greater seriousness and inter-institutional collaboration. The minister emphasises that the responsibility for public safety lies directly with the Government Delegation and criticises that these meetings should not serve to deflect responsibilities.
The firm tone of the message sent from Puerta del Sol makes it clear that a meeting is not deemed necessary for the delegate to fulfil his obligations. “There is no need for any meeting for the Government Delegation to fully exercise the powers attributed to it,” part of the text states. Furthermore, García Martín urges compliance with the stipulations of Article 73.3 of Law 40/2015 to effectively guarantee public safety.
