A crime that shocks the community
The quiet town of Galapagar has been shaken by a brutal murder that has left its residents in shock. Elia Cobián, an 80-year-old woman and well-known owner of the historic haberdashery Almacenes Cobián, was found dead in her home last Tuesday. This tragic event has reopened the debate about safety in the area and has left a deep mark on those who knew this beloved figure of the local commerce.
Almacenes Cobián, located next to the iconic Pontejos square, was for decades a reference point for lovers of textile art and crafts. Known for its wide range of buttons and threads, the establishment closed its doors in 2018 after years of uninterrupted activity. Today, the premises house a tourist bazaar, but the memory of Elia and her dedication to the business endures among the locals.
Elia lived alone in a property known as Sobrepeña, located in La Navata. Her body was discovered by a friend who went to check on her well-being after being unable to contact her. According to initial reports, the elderly woman had multiple bruises and was gagged, indicating that she suffered a violent assault before being murdered.
The early investigations suggest that robbery may have been the motive for the attack. The thieves reportedly entered the property by breaking one of the windows and left the house completely ransacked. Personal belongings and jewellery have been reported missing, which reinforces this hypothesis.
Local residents have expressed their concern about the growing insecurity in the area. Esteban, one of the tenants close to Elia, shared his personal experience: “In one year, I have been robbed four times.” This situation has generated fear among the neighbours, who now feel more vulnerable after this tragic event.
The Civil Guard has taken charge of the case and is investigating the circumstances of the crime seriously. Although there were no security cameras inside Elia's home, available recordings in the vicinity are being reviewed to identify possible suspects.
As the investigation progresses, more details about this heinous act that has left an indelible mark on Galapagar are expected to emerge. Meanwhile, the Town Hall held a minute of silence in honour of Elia Cobián as a show of collective mourning for this irreparable loss.
