A scandal that shakes Madrid socialism

The Spanish political scene is facing a new scandal involving the mayor of Velilla de San Antonio, Antonia Alcázar. The Provincial Court of Madrid has scheduled a trial for next Wednesday where the socialist leader, along with three other senior municipal officials, could receive a sentence of three years in prison and twelve years of disqualification.

The case revolves around accusations of urban and environmental prevarication. According to the Prosecutor's Office, Alcázar and her team have ignored residents' complaints for years about the restaurant ‘El Casón de la Quinta de San Antonio’, located on María Zambrano Street. This establishment operated without the necessary licenses to use its outdoor areas, turning them into a venue for outdoor events.

Despite numerous complaints about excessive noise and crowds that extended into the early hours of the morning, local authorities took no effective measures. In fact, only four sanctioning files were initiated, which eventually expired without resolution.

The situation is further complicated by the relationship between Antonia Alcázar and her sister María Gertrudis Alcázar, who was secretary to former president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. This connection has attracted considerable media attention, especially since Zapatero has been mentioned in relation to the case. On social media, images of the former leader publicly supporting Antonia during her electoral campaign are circulating.

Apart from the time behind bars she could face, the Prosecutor's Office is also demanding compensation for the residents affected by the problems arising from the illegal operation of the restaurant. The accusation claims that Alcázar acted with full knowledge by ignoring the relevant laws related to land use.

As the trial date approaches, pressure is mounting on Antonia Alcázar. Her active defense of figures like Zapatero has been met with criticism and questions about her integrity as a public official. The combination of her legal situation with her familial connection to a former political leader creates a tense atmosphere both in Velilla and in the Madrid political sphere.
