A mayor in the eye of the storm
Politics in Móstoles is at a critical moment following the admission of a lawsuit against the mayor, Manuel Bautista, from the Popular Party. The complaint, which includes alleged crimes of sexual and labour harassment, as well as the revelation of secrets, has unleashed a wave of reactions both within and outside the party. Despite the seriousness of the accusations, Bautista has declared his intention to remain in office and continue working for the municipality.
Since the judicial decision became known, support for Bautista from the PP has been strong. The Minister of the Presidency, Miguel Ángel García Martín, stated that there is not enough evidence to justify the accusations and accused the opposition of creating a political case. In this vein, other prominent members of the party have defended the mayor, arguing that he is being subjected to a “penalty of the bench”, which undermines his presumption of innocence.
In a press conference, Bautista rejected any possibility of resignation and described the allegations as part of a “political witch hunt”. He claimed to have not had access to the full content of the lawsuit and questioned the credibility of the main witness presented by the former councillor who filed the complaint. According to him, this individual has a history related to administrative irregularities.
As this political scandal unfolds, parties such as the PSOE and Más Madrid have demanded the immediate resignation of the mayor. Óscar López, the Madrid socialist leader, emphasised that there can be no further delay with someone under such accusations at the helm of the municipality. The socialist spokesperson also openly criticised Isabel Díaz Ayuso for protecting Bautista instead of acting responsibly in light of these serious allegations.
Apart from the clamor for his immediate resignation, some opponents have pointed out what they consider a “defensive culture” within the PP. Manuela Bergerot highlighted how Ayuso has chosen to support an accused individual rather than those who may have been victims within the party itself. On the other hand, Podemos has described this situation as a serious indication of a lack of institutional exemplarity.
As key dates for Móstoles approach —such as the upcoming Local Security Board— the political climate is becoming increasingly tense. Francisco Martín, the Government delegate, has made it clear that he expects to see concrete actions before Friday; if there are no significant changes in municipal leadership by then, he may be forced to intervene directly.
