A historic visit that will light up the capital
The city of Madrid is in full swing ahead of the imminent arrival of Pope Leo XIV, an event that has been described by the mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida as one of the most significant in the recent history of the capital. Under the slogan "Lift your gaze", the City Council has launched an ambitious institutional campaign that will transform the urban landscape, dyeing the city in white and yellow, the emblematic colours of the Vatican.
From May 20, Madrid will see its streets filled with posters and banners welcoming the Holy Father. The Palacio de Cibeles, one of the most iconic buildings, will be illuminated with papal colours to make Leo XIV feel at home. Additionally, cultural activities have been scheduled during his stay, including a Night in White and Yellow where museums will remain open until late hours.
The municipal nurseries are working hard to plant over 100,000 white and yellow flowers in various strategic locations. This initiative aims not only to beautify Madrid but also to create a festive atmosphere in line with the magnitude of the event. Decorations will not only be present in public spaces; banners will also be distributed to businesses and homes thanks to a collaboration with the Madrid Hotel Business Association.
The municipal plan will include a comprehensive mobility and security operation to ensure the smooth running of the event. Almeida has warned about the complications this could generate in Madrid's traffic during those days, but assures that citizens will be informed well in advance to facilitate their personal organisation.
The Pope's visit is not only a religious milestone; it also represents a significant economic opportunity for Madrid. This event is expected to attract thousands of national and international visitors, which will benefit the local tourism sector.
