A day of remembrance and tribute
This Wednesday, Madrid donned mourning and solemnity to pay tribute to the 193 victims of the terrorist attacks on 11 March 2004. In an emotional event held at the iconic Real Casa de Correos, regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso and mayor José Luis Martínez Almeida led a ceremony that brought together various authorities and representatives from associations dedicated to the memory of the victims.
The event began with the traditional ringing of bells, which resonated for two minutes as a sign of respect and remembrance. This symbolic gesture was replicated in numerous municipalities across the country. Subsequently, Díaz Ayuso and Martínez Almeida placed a laurel wreath under the commemorative plaque located at kilometer zero, a crucial point symbolising the unity and strength of the people of Madrid.
The ceremony was not limited to the floral offering; it also featured musical accompaniment from the Community of Madrid Orchestra (Ocram), which performed significant pieces before the national anthem. This tribute is just the first of several events scheduled for this meaningful day. Later, both Díaz Ayuso and Martínez Almeida will attend an event organised by the Victims of Terrorism Association in the Forest of Remembrance, located in El Retiro park.
Throughout the day, other important tributes are planned. Floral offerings will be made at emblematic locations such as Atocha station and the memorial on Téllez street. Additionally, in the afternoon, similar ceremonies will take place at the nearby stations of Santa Eugenia and El Pozo, locations that also suffered the devastating effects of the attack.
This event was attended not only by local political leaders but also by parliamentary spokespeople and prominent members of the Spanish Government. The joint presence underscores a clear message: Madrid remains united in the face of shared grief and pays tribute not only to those who lost their lives that fateful day but also to the more than 2,000 injured, as well as to all those who provided help during the most critical moments.
