A step towards sustainability
The Community of Madrid has launched an ambitious initiative aimed at promoting sustainable mobility in the region. This year, individuals, freelancers, and companies will be able to access significant grants to dispose of polluting vehicles and opt for more eco-friendly alternatives. The measure, which is part of the Mueve Madrid Plan, aims not only to reduce pollution but also to modernise the vehicle fleet of the community.
Owners of petrol cars registered before the year 2000 or diesel vehicles registered before 2006 will be able to apply for grants of up to 2,000 euros when scrapping their vehicles. Additionally, there are extra incentives for those who choose to purchase an electric or hydrogen-powered car, especially for taxi drivers and vehicles for hire (VTC). The grants also include options for electric bicycles and mopeds.
A crucial part of the programme is that 30% of the grants are specifically reserved for residents or workers in low emission areas. This strategy aims to mitigate the negative impact that the implementation of these areas may have on citizens and promote a transition towards cleaner transport.
Applications are open until 31 December 2026, providing interested parties with ample time to participate in this initiative. The requirements are accessible: any adult resident in one of the Madrid municipalities can submit their application. Since its launch in 2024, over 6,372 applications have already been registered, reflecting considerable public interest.
Throughout the time elapsed since the programme began, approximately 7.8 million euros have been allocated, mainly for the scrapping of old vehicles. Of the applications received, more than 60% correspond to individuals who opted to receive 1,000 euros after disposing of their old cars without an environmental label. Others have chosen to invest in new models with Zero or ECO labels.
It is not just about scrapping; the grants also cover options such as electric bicycles with up to 600 euros, motorcycles like scooters up to 700 euros, and even up to 20,000 euros for hydrogen-powered taxis. These measures reflect a clear commitment to more efficient and less polluting mobility.
