Transformation in Montecarmelo
The City Council of Madrid has made a decision that will change the face of the Montecarmelo neighbourhood. In an announcement made by José Antonio Martínez Páramo, delegate for Cleaning and Green Areas, it has been confirmed the abandonment of the Selur installation in this area, meaning that workshops and facilities related to urban cleaning will not be built. This measure responds to community demands that have been present over the last two years.
Despite the abandonment of the canton, the City Council will maintain a changing room for the workers responsible for cleaning in Montecarmelo and Mirasierra. Additionally, 2 million euros will be allocated to transform the land into a park, which will include a wide bike lane and green areas. This initiative aims not only to improve the working conditions of the employees but also to provide residents with a recreational and healthy space.
The news was met with applause from members of the NO to the Canton Platform present at the District Board. However, opposition groups such as Vox, PSOE, and Más Madrid expressed their surprise at this decision. Ignacio Ansaldo, a councillor from Vox, openly questioned the claims made by councillor Páramo regarding the use of the space: “With 14,000 m² are they only going to build changing rooms?”, he joked during his speech.
Mónica Palos from PSOE also expressed her disbelief regarding how this decision was communicated to the residents and suggested that it might have been motivated by an unfavourable ruling related to the original project. On the other hand, Francisca Otero from Más Madrid highlighted the importance of joint work among residents to achieve significant changes in their community.
As this transformative process progresses, it is clear that the City Council seeks to balance operational needs with community expectations. The elimination of the canton represents a step towards a higher quality of life for residents and a significant improvement in the urban environment. With this new park planned, Montecarmelo could become a prominent example within Madrid of how listening to the community can lead to more sustainable and beneficial decisions.
