An accident on Gran Vía left a young woman in serious condition after being struck by a police motorcyclist. The incident occurred during the LGTBI+ Pride celebrations.
The LGTBI+ Pride celebration on Gran Vía turned tragic when a municipal police motorcyclist hit three young people around 10:00 PM on Saturday. The victims, all in their twenties, were crossing a pedestrian crossing when the officer, who was part of the Arganzuela unit, lost control of his electric motorcycle and struck them. This incident has raised concerns and questions about safety during mass events.
Eyewitnesses report that the police officer was travelling in a lane designated for emergencies, intended exclusively for ambulances and police vehicles. However, it seems he could not brake in time before colliding with the girls. “The motorcycle got away from him and he couldn’t do anything,” commented one of the witnesses.
The impact was devastating; one of the young women, identified as María López, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Hospital Clínico San Carlos with a possible femur fracture. Another friend sustained minor bruises and was taken to the same medical centre, while the third young woman was treated at Hospital de La Paz for superficial bruises. The police officer also suffered minor injuries and is currently on sick leave.
The accident caused chaotic scenes among the event attendees, who quickly surrounded the area as medical services arrived. The situation generated a great uproar among those present, who had been enjoying the festive atmosphere until that moment.
Investigations are underway to determine the exact causes of the accident. The motorcycle has been sent for examination and a possible “mechanical failure” is being considered as one of the initial hypotheses. Police officials have indicated that it is essential to clarify what happened to ensure public safety during future events.
Such incidents are not new; just two years ago, another similar accident occurred during a demonstration in Madrid where several pedestrians were injured by an out-of-control police vehicle. The need to review protocols and preventive measures is more urgent than ever.
The Pride organisers have expressed their concern over this incident and have requested a meeting with local authorities to discuss how to improve safety during future celebrations.
