Crucial police intervention in a domestic violence case
On the night of last Sunday, the Madrid district of Chamberí was the scene of an attempted homicide that could have had fatal consequences. A 19-year-old Nicaraguan was arrested after attempting to murder his aunt's ex-boyfriend, a 28-year-old Colombian, who was in the family home despite a court order prohibiting him from approaching.
The events occurred in a ground floor flat located at 3 Vargas Street, where a 40-year-old Ecuadorian woman had welcomed her ex-partner, defying the restrictions imposed by the court. Upon learning of the man's presence in the home, the nephew arrived armed with a machete and a heated argument quickly escalated into violence.
Neighbours alerted the authorities about what appeared to be a serious assault. The CIMACC-091 control room received multiple calls reporting screams and blows coming from inside the property. Upon arriving at the scene, the officers heard alarming noises and found the door blocked by objects and a struggle between the two men.
The situation was critical: one of the officers managed to glimpse the victim, severely injured, covered in blood and with a semi-amputation of his left forearm while trying to defend himself from the attack.
Given the imminent threat to the victim's life and the dangerousness of the weapon used, the officers decided to act quickly. With additional support from the Prevention and Reaction Unit (UPR), they conducted a tactical entry into the home using shields for protection. Despite efforts to subdue the attacker, he continued to attempt to stab his victim even during the police intervention.
Finally, they managed to disarm him, securing the blood-stained machete as evidence for future investigations. Once the situation was under control, the officers began providing medical assistance to the injured man, who was suffering from severe bleeding and multiple stab wounds.
A police officer trained in first aid effectively applied a tourniquet to the injured man's left arm to stop the massive blood loss. According to later statements from the doctor who treated the injured man at the Clinical Hospital, this action was crucial in saving his life: "That tourniquet was very well placed. That’s what saved him.".
Despite the serious initial condition, thanks to the rapid actions of both the officers and the medical staff, the patient was stabilised before undergoing urgent surgery.
The Nicaraguan youth was arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide and illegal possession of weapons. During subsequent investigations, it was revealed that his aunt had resumed her relationship with her ex-partner despite the existing legal restrictions. This incident once again brings to the forefront critical issues related to domestic violence and unfulfilled court orders.
