An operation against uncontrolled speed
In an effort to curb dangerous activities on the roads, the Civil Guard has carried out an operation that has resulted in the arrest of eleven young people, all with criminal records, for their involvement in clandestine races and mass gatherings of modified vehicles. The investigation began last summer after detecting a significant increase in these illegal activities in the south of the Community of Madrid.
The gatherings, popularly known as ‘meet-ups’, attracted more than 500 participants and were mainly organised through social media. Drivers congregated on weekends in locations such as Fuenlabrada, Pinto, Valdemoro and other nearby areas. However, attendees did not limit their meetings to Madrid; they also travelled to other regions such as Cuenca and Navarra to participate in these illegal competitions.
The organisers implemented various tactics to avoid detection by the authorities. Among them, the use of balaclavas and the manipulation of license plates were common during these events. Despite their efforts to hide, investigators managed to identify several key individuals within the group.
Aside from the arrests, the operation resulted in the confiscation of four vehicles used for these illicit activities. Additionally, items such as flares that were used during the gatherings were seized. Authorities have indicated that this type of behaviour not only violates laws related to reckless driving but also poses a serious danger to other road users.
The Civil Guard continues to investigate possible additional crimes related to this network, including document forgery and serious disobedience towards law enforcement officers. This case underscores the urgent need to promote greater awareness of the risks associated with illegal racing and irresponsible behaviour behind the wheel.
