The Civil Guard has arrested a Swedish passenger aged 86 at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport for transporting 4.5 kilos of cocaine in his suitcase. The arrest took place on June 5, when specialized agents detected a suspicious suitcase coming from San José, Costa Rica, with a final destination of Brussels, Belgium. Upon opening the suitcase, they found the drugs distributed in nine cylinders wrapped in paper. This case highlights the tactics used by drug trafficking organizations to recruit vulnerable individuals. According to initial investigations, the elderly man may have been targeted due to his precarious economic situation and health issues. In exchange for money, he was reportedly tasked with several trips to transport drugs to various destinations such as Bogotá, Dubai, and several European cities like Barcelona and Madrid. Criminal networks have begun to employ more sophisticated methods to attract their victims, using direct channels like WhatsApp and social media to offer financial incentives. This type of recruitment is not new; in recent years, there has been an increase in cases where elderly individuals are used as ‘mules’ due to their less suspicious profile before authorities. The Civil Guard has intensified its efforts to detect these types of criminal activities that exploit social and economic vulnerability. After being brought before the judiciary, the elderly man was remanded in custody while investigations into the organization behind the trafficking are carried out.
