A devastating forest fire has ravaged an industrial estate in Chapinería, causing the loss of 120 collectible vehicles and severe damage to several businesses. Those affected are facing million-euro losses and total uncertainty about their futures.
A forest fire has left a trail of destruction in the industrial estate of Chapinería, Madrid, where 120 historic cars used for audiovisual productions have been lost. The company Evenkun SL, specialised in the rental of these vehicles, estimates that the losses amount to €700,000. Its owner, José Luis, laments the irreparability of some unique models such as a 1974 Toyota and a 1971 Ford Capri. “It’s not just the value of the car; it’s years of restoration and cultural heritage,” he explains while observing the charred remains.
The fire started in the nearby vegetation and quickly spread to the industrial buildings. At least a dozen have suffered severe damage, with some completely destroyed. A mechanical workshop has also been reduced to ashes, leaving its owner without clients or immediate prospects for recovering his business.
The company Ecocalor, dedicated to the manufacture of radiant panels, is also among those affected. Its owner estimates losses between €250,000 and €300,000, unable to access the interior yet to assess the damage due to the partial collapse of the building.
Business owners share a common concern: the delay in receiving public aid and uncertainty over whether their insurance will cover all losses. “Compensations are usually insufficient,” one of them points out.
As the Chapinería City Council works on a damage assessment, Mayor Lucía Moya has stated that the economic impact is devastating for this small municipality: “More than ten warehouses have burned down and there are damaged homes.” The local community is hoping for urgent support to face this crisis.
The fire has highlighted previous issues related to the maintenance of the surrounding land; some business owners criticise that adjacent plots were not adequately cleared. “If they had done their job, my warehouse wouldn’t have burned down,” claims one affected individual.
As experts assess the damage, owners face an uncertain future while trying to rebuild what they have lost.
