The Community of Madrid has denounced the attitude of 60 striking forest firefighters, accusing them of blackmail amid a crisis due to wildfires. This situation could compromise public safety.
The Community of Madrid has issued a statement describing as "unacceptable" the behaviour of a small group of 60 forest firefighters who have decided to maintain a strike during a national emergency caused by wildfires. According to the regional Government, this action is considered an attempt at "blackmail" that distorts the image of the exemplary functioning of the emergency service. The situation is particularly critical, as the wildfires are severely affecting several areas of the region.
The authorities have emphasised that "the management of a large forest fire cannot become a tool for labour or political pressure." In this regard, they have reminded that resources must be mobilised from the assigned parks and crews, following strict protocols established for over 25 years. However, these firefighters are not at their operational bases as stipulated in their contracts and remain at the General Directorate of Emergencies, which is causing disorganisation and putting operations at risk.
The regional Government has stressed that presenting this situation as a lack of resources or as a refusal to mobilise them alters reality and generates social alarm. This group represents less than 1% of the total firefighting device, composed of more than 6,000 professionals and volunteers. Despite the collective effort to combat the fires, these individual actions are being seen as irresponsible and unacceptable.
Over time, the Government has held numerous discussions with this group to address their labour demands. However, the authorities believe that using a national emergency to increase pressure on the Administration is inappropriate and irresponsible. The criticism intensifies when considering that while hundreds work hard on the fire front and thousands are evacuated for safety, some choose to neglect their duty.
In response to this tense situation, the regional Executive has announced its intention to explore all necessary administrative and legal avenues to hold accountable those whose conduct may have compromised public service or put both people and natural heritage at risk. This decision reflects a firm commitment to public safety and the proper functioning of the operational system in emergencies.
As efforts continue to control the active wildfires in various affected areas, it is crucial to remind all citizens of the recommended preventive measures: stay informed through official channels and follow the instructions given by local authorities regarding evacuations or temporary restrictions.
