An international operation against drug trafficking
In a surprising turn of events, the National Police, along with the Civil Guard and Customs Surveillance, has carried out an operation that has dismantled a criminal network dedicated to cocaine trafficking. This organization used ingenious methods to introduce the drug into Spain, camouflaging it within shipments of chocolates. The intervention took place at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport and involved collaboration with Ecuadorian authorities.
The investigation began after detecting irregularities in an import company owned by one of the suspects. This individual had established a network that included a transporter and another person who rented a premises in Madrid to store the goods. This premises became the nerve centre where the drug was kept and manipulated.
In early February 2026, Ecuadorian authorities made a crucial discovery when inspecting a shipment labelled as "chocolate tears." Inside, they found a significant amount of base cocaine hidden among the chocolates. This discovery led to rapid coordination between the prosecutors and police forces of both countries to trace the narcotic.
The operation culminated in the arrest in Madrid of three key members of the criminal group, who face serious charges for involvement in a criminal organization and illicit drug trafficking. During the operation, more than 62,827 grams of cocaine were seized, representing a significant blow to international drug trafficking.
This case not only highlights the effectiveness of joint work between different police and prosecutorial bodies but also the complexities of modern drug trafficking.
