A Day of Terror in Madrid
This Monday afternoon, the district of Carabanchel became the scene of a dramatic event that kept residents on the edge of panic. A 51-year-old man was arrested after barricading himself in his home, armed with knives and threatening to blow up the building using gas canisters.
The events began around 14:00 hours, when the individual intimidated a 61-year-old neighbour with a knife. The situation escalated quickly, and by 14:30 hours, he locked himself in his home, starting to throw objects from the terrace while making threats about a possible explosion.
Given the imminent risk, authorities decided to evacuate all residents from the building located on Albares de la Ribera street. Officers from the Prevention and Reaction Unit (UPR) and the Police Intervention Unit (UIP) arrived at the scene to manage the crisis. For several hours, the man remained barricaded, refusing to surrender and even throwing objects at the officers.
This is not the first time this man has caused concern among his neighbours. According to testimonies collected, they have had to call the police four times this year due to his erratic behaviour. “Everything he picks up, he throws,” commented a distressed resident. The material damage is evident; broken glass and damaged vehicles are just some of the consequences of the arrested man's violent behaviour.
The man's relatives have indicated that his situation is exacerbated by mental health issues. A nearby neighbour revealed that he does not take his medication properly and had been admitted to a psychiatric hospital for over a month before returning to the building. His brother acts as his legal guardian and tries to help him, but neighbours feel they need more support from social services to ensure their safety.
As the initial fear dissipates following the police intervention, residents are demanding urgent attention to prevent similar future incidents. The community lives under a constant shadow of fear and uncertainty regarding possible violent reactions from the man trapped in his own internal demons.
