A fatal workplace accident shakes Madrid
In the early hours of Thursday, a tragic event has shaken the railway network of Madrid, where a 39-year-old worker has died after being struck by a backhoe while performing maintenance tasks. The incident occurred in the tunnel connecting the Laguna and Embajadores stations, part of the C-5 Cercanías line.
At 00:55 hours, emergency services received a call alerting them to the serious accident. The corresponding protocol was immediately activated, and several units from the Madrid Medical Emergency Service (Summa 112), along with members of the City of Madrid Fire Brigade, headed to the scene to attempt to save the worker.
Upon arrival, the medical team found the man with a severe thoracic trauma and in a state of cardiac arrest. Despite efforts made for approximately forty minutes to carry out cardiopulmonary resuscitation, it was not possible to reverse his condition, and his death was confirmed at the scene.
Meanwhile, firefighters secured the area to facilitate access for medical teams in the challenging conditions of the underground tunnel. The Municipal Police of Madrid has initiated an official investigation to determine the exact causes that led to this tragic outcome. Agents specialized in workplace accidents are reviewing whether all necessary regulations were followed for operating heavy machinery in confined spaces.
This unfortunate accident once again brings to light the risks associated with night work in critical infrastructures. The C-5 line is vital for thousands of daily commuters connecting Móstoles with Fuenlabrada and other key areas of central Madrid. Night work is essential to ensure the safety of public transport; however, it requires precise coordination among all workers and teams involved.
