Incident in the heart of Madrid
This Tuesday morning, a gas leak has caused significant disruptions in the service of the Madrid Metro, affecting lines 2 and 5. The incident occurred around 10:00 AM during modernisation works at the iconic Ventas station, prompting metro officials to take immediate measures to ensure passenger safety.
Metro authorities confirmed that after accidentally puncturing a gas pipe, they decided to suspend service on key sections. On line 2, which connects Las Rosas to Cuatro Caminos, the disruption affects journeys between the Alsacia and Retiro stations. Meanwhile, line 5 has seen its service interrupted between Quintana and Núñez de Balboa.
Not only have these two lines been impacted; interruptions have also been reported on Line 6, specifically between O'Donnell and Nuevos Ministerios. Technicians are already working on-site to repair the damage and restore traffic as soon as possible.
This setback occurs within the framework of a larger project aimed at completely renovating the Ventas station. With an investment exceeding 19 million euros, plans include installing five new lifts to facilitate access for people with reduced mobility and renovating a lobby that has not been open to the public since 1970. This effort aims not only to modernise the facilities but also to integrate this historic stop within the cultural circuit known as the Metro Museums.
The cultural circuit includes other iconic spaces such as the Pacífico Engine Room and the famous ghost station of Chamberí. The completion of the project promises to transform Ventas into a hub for both travellers and heritage enthusiasts.
