A significant advance in public transport safety
The Madrid Metro network is undergoing a transformation phase that promises to significantly improve the safety and efficiency of the service. In an ambitious project, automatic doors will be installed at 28 stations on line 6, marking a milestone in the modernization of the system. This deployment is part of the preparations for the arrival of the driverless train, scheduled for 2027.
The first module has already been placed at Legazpi station, where travellers have been able to observe the tangible start of this innovative initiative. The installation was carried out during night hours by a specialized team of around 20 workers. Additionally, new ground signals have been added to ensure that passengers maintain a safe distance from the platform edge.
This project includes more than 4,000 automatic doors, which will be distributed along nearly 6.5 kilometres between the selected stations. All work is expected to be completed by the end of 2026 or early 2027, coinciding with the introduction of the automated system.
The stations that will receive these doors include key locations such as Nuevos Ministerios, Cuatro Caminos and Moncloa, among others. In total, approximately 58 modules per platform will be needed, each designed with durable materials such as steel and laminated glass. The doors will have a height of over 1.7 metres and a width of nearly 3.8 metres.
Each module will be equipped with information screens and light systems indicating their status: blue when closed, green during opening, and red if out of service. This technology will not only enhance safety by preventing falls onto the tracks but also optimise service flow by synchronising with train doors.
As this pilot project progresses, the Transport Department assures that these measures are essential for creating an effective physical barrier between passengers and the tracks. Successful implementation could set a precedent for future improvements on other lines of the Madrid metro.
