Madrid to Maintain Public Transport Discounts Until 2026: What Does This Mean for Users?

Extended Discounts on Madrid Public Transport

The Community of Madrid has decided to extend the current discount fares on public transport until 2026, offering a significant price reduction ranging from 30% to 100%. This measure, approved by the Regional Transport Consortium (CRTM), aims to facilitate citizens' mobility in a challenging economic context.

Among the most notable new features is the continuation of the free pass for those over 65 and under 14 years old. These groups will be able to continue using all means of transport at no cost, which represents a considerable relief for many families and elderly individuals. The funding comes mainly from regional and state funds, thus ensuring the sustainability of the program.

Young people will also benefit from the extension of the 50% discount on the youth pass, which will remain at an accessible price of 10 euros per month. This initiative aims to encourage public transport use among younger individuals, contributing to more sustainable mobility and less dependence on cars.

Starting next year, adult users aged between 26 and 64 will also enjoy a 40% reduction, keeping monthly fares at accessible levels: 32.70 euros for zone A and up to 49.20 euros for other zones. Additionally, the multi-card with ten trips will continue to cost 7.30 euros, allowing users to combine different means of transport such as metro and buses.

Initially launched in September 2022 in response to the economic crisis exacerbated by recent global events, these aids have proven effective. Since their implementation, there has been a significant increase in the number of monthly passes issued; in 2024 alone, Metro de Madrid reached record figures with over 715 million trips. Projections indicate that this number could exceed 740 million, highlighting a positive trend towards public transport use.

Despite the widespread success, it is important to note that some lines have faced operational issues. For example, during the first half of the current year, line L6 experienced partial cuts that affected its normal operation. However, this has not deterred more citizens from choosing to use these public services.
