Radical transformation of the C-5: Madrid prepares for a revolution in rail transport

A new era for the C-5 Cercanías

The C-5 Cercanías line in Madrid, known for being the busiest in the country, will undergo a profound renovation that promises to revolutionise transport in the region. With an estimated budget of €1.35 billion, this ambitious project aims to increase passenger capacity by 60%, thanks to the incorporation of driverless trains and significant improvements to the infrastructure.

The first service cuts are scheduled for the summer of 2027, affecting the section between Atocha and Cuatro Vientos. For approximately four months, users will not be able to use this vital section, which represents a considerable logistical challenge. To mitigate the inconvenience, alternative buses will be provided to cover the affected routes.

The project will be developed over five years, with a timeline that anticipates multiple phases until its completion in 2031. The Minister of Transport and Mobility, Óscar Puente, has emphasised that although there will be inconveniences during the works, efforts will be made to carry out the work during periods of lower demand to minimise the impact on travellers.

Among the 28 planned actions, the modernisation of the signalling system and improvements at key stations such as San José de Valderas and Alcorcón are included. These reforms aim not only to increase service capacity but also to enhance safety in the event of incidents. The points of track change will be reorganised to facilitate transfers to other Metro lines.

The arrival of new trains approximately 200 metres long, equipped with more doors to expedite boarding and alighting, is one of the highlights of the project. These changes are designed not only to accommodate more passengers but also to make their experience more efficient.

Despite the effort to minimise interruptions to rail service during the works —with 15 planned interventions without cuts— it will be crucial to have the support of the Regional Transport Consortium. This will allow for the reinforcement of alternative lines while the necessary work is carried out.
