Innovation in Public Transport
The Community of Madrid has taken a significant step towards modernising public transport by integrating, for the first time, real-time location data of intercity buses into Google Maps. This initiative, presented by the Minister of Housing, Transport and Infrastructure, Jorge Rodrigo, during a commemorative event for World Public Transport Day, promises to transform the experience of over three million daily travellers.
From now on, users will be able to know not only the scheduled times but also the actual waiting times and the exact location of the buses. This tool becomes an essential ally for those who rely on public transport for their daily commutes. The integration was achieved thanks to the connection between the technological systems used by the operators and the Google Maps route planner.
Accessing this new functionality is extremely simple. Users just need to open Google Maps, select the public transport option, and mark their desired stop on the map. Immediately, the available lines will appear along with the estimated waiting time for each. This advancement not only facilitates trip planning but also allows for the detection of possible incidents or delays in real time.
During his speech, Jorge Rodrigo emphasised that this innovation reinforces the commitment of the Regional Transport Consortium (CRTM) to the continuous improvement of traveller information. “We are moving towards a more efficient and accessible system,” Rodrigo stated. The implementation of digital technologies is key to providing a user-oriented service.
With this initiative, Madrid positions itself as a pioneering city in the use of advanced technology to optimise its public transport network. The ability to track intercity buses in real time will not only enhance the daily experience of travellers but could also encourage more citizens to choose this sustainable means over the use of private cars.
