A recognition of the fight for freedom
Plaza de la Villa in Madrid became a vibrant stage this Tuesday, where María Corina Machado, prominent Venezuelan opposition figure and presidential candidate, was honoured with the Golden Key of the Villa of Madrid. This award, the highest bestowed by the city, symbolizes not only recognition of her bravery but also a strong message of support for the Venezuelan people fighting for their freedom.
The Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, opened the event by recalling that this act is a historic milestone. “The handing over of this key is a symbol of admiration for the struggle of the Venezuelan people as a whole,” Almeida stated. In his speech, he echoed the famous passage from Don Quixote: “Freedom is one of the most precious gifts that heaven has given to men,” thus underscoring the fundamental value of this concept for both Spain and Venezuela.
As Machado addressed her compatriots present in the square, she could not hold back her tears upon hearing the shouts and applause resonating among her supporters. “We have lived 27 years under a brutal tyranny,” she expressed with a choked voice. The emotional connection was palpable as she recalled difficult moments in her political and personal life, including times when she had to explain to her daughter the threats she faced.
Machado also highlighted the historical ties between the two countries. She recalled how April 19 marks a crucial date in Venezuela related to its independence and how that shared history remains relevant today. “These keys are an honour that reaffirms the union between two peoples with a common history,” she emphasised.
Despite the grim context facing Venezuela under the current regime, María Corina Machado called on all exiled Venezuelans to return and contribute to the necessary change in their country. “We must move forward so that popular sovereignty is respected,” she warned, acknowledging the monumental challenge ahead of them.
In closing her speech, Machado deeply thanked the City Council of Madrid for this significant gesture: “These keys are a symbol of opening to freedom for the brave Venezuelan people whose hearts beat proudly.” With a conspiratorial smile towards Almeida, she added: “I have to give you a double congratulations: for your birthday and for the fans of Atlético de Madrid.”
