From today, the Directorate General of Traffic activates a special device to manage 5.6 million journeys just this weekend. The main routes will be affected by the intense holiday traffic.
Starting today, the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has launched its second special operation for the Summer Operation 2026. This operation coincides with a weekend marked by a significant increase in traffic, with a forecast of 5.6 million journeys by road. Throughout the month of August, it is estimated that 54.5 million long-distance trips will be made across Spain.
The roads that will experience the most congestion include the A-6 between Madrid and Valladolid, the A-42 and the A-4 from Madrid to Córdoba, as well as the A-3 and the R-3 towards Valencia. The DGT has indicated that this increase in vehicle volume is due to the overlap between those starting their holidays and those returning home after their summer getaways.
In addition to national traffic, a significant flow of vehicles from Portugal and Maghreb countries is also expected, heading towards the port areas. This convergence will generate intense traffic on the main routes connecting major cities with the most popular tourist destinations.
To ensure safe mobility during these critical days, the special device will include various measures such as increased surveillance and traffic regulation. Agents from the Civil Guard Traffic Group will participate alongside personnel specialised in traffic management. Fixed and mobile radars, helicopters equipped with advanced technology such as the Pegasus system, drones, and cameras installed on gantries will be deployed to detect driving violations.
The main objective is to reinforce compliance with regulations and reduce accidents through constant supervision. The DGT has emphasised that these actions aim to contribute to safer mobility during one of the busiest months of the year.
Among the additional measures planned are the activation of reversible and additional lanes at critical points to improve traffic flow. Alternative routes will also be recommended to ease congestion, and roadworks that may obstruct passage will be temporarily suspended.
The DGT advises all drivers to check their vehicles before travelling and to plan their journeys in advance. It is essential to respect traffic rules and to be informed about the current state of the roads before setting off.
This summer also brings important new features: it is mandatory to carry a V-16 beacon to signal any incidents on the road. Additionally, a free telephone service (018) is available to assist victims involved in traffic accidents.
With these measures implemented by the DGT, it is expected to mitigate the effects of intense holiday traffic and ensure safer holidays for all travellers.
