An unexpected end at Wembley
Atlético de Madrid's adventure in the Champions League came to an end after a tough defeat against Arsenal, with an aggregate score of 2-1. Despite the elimination, the red-and-white club has managed to secure significant income that could benefit its finances in the long term.
Although the defeat at Wembley resulted in an immediate loss of €18.5 million, the numbers are not as discouraging as they seem. Atlético had previously accumulated €27.75 million during the group stage thanks to four victories and a draw. This includes their final position in the group, which awarded them approximately €6.93 million.
Clubs participating in the Champions League receive different amounts depending on their performance. Each team that reaches the group stage receives an initial payment of €17.87 million, in addition to subsequent balances. For each victory, €2.1 million is awarded, while draws generate €700,000. With access to the round of 16, Atlético also added €11 million more.
Despite the setback against Arsenal, it is estimated that the club will obtain a total of approximately €74.18 million, including rewards for their previous victories and their overall performance in the competition. Additionally, an extra income related to the television market and other economic factors is expected to add around €30 million more.
As the doors to the most prestigious European tournament close, all eyes are on how Atlético will use these funds to strengthen its squad and improve its competitiveness both nationally and internationally. The club's financial management will be key to capitalising on this experience and preparing for future challenges.
