Atlético speaks out after defeat in London
The Atlético de Madrid has raised its voice to UEFA, expressing its discontent with the refereeing in the second leg of the Champions League semifinals, where they faced Arsenal. The match, played at the Emirates Stadium, ended in a 1-0 victory for the home side, leaving the Spanish team out of the tournament.
According to sources close to the club, Atlético expressed disbelief regarding several refereeing decisions made by Daniel Siebert during the match. In particular, the rojiblancos pointed out two key plays they considered decisive for the final result. The first was an alleged offside that preceded a push inside the area on Giuliano Simeone, an action the club considers a clear penalty. The second controversial situation was an initially unpunished foul on Antoine Griezmann, which occurred just after another infringement committed by Riccardo Calafiori.
Aside from the individual decisions, Atlético also criticized the added time given by the referee, arguing that the five minutes awarded were insufficient given the number of interruptions and time-wasting observed during the match. According to their calculations, only a minute and a half of extra time was actually played.
Despite the evident discomfort, both players and coaching staff were instructed not to justify the elimination based on the refereeing performance. In the post-match press conference, Diego Simeone avoided delving into the referee's decisions and emphasized that he did not want to make excuses for the defeat. “I’m not going to dwell on something very easy and simple like the play involving Griezmann,” Simeone commented.
Shortly after the match, Koke Resurrección, the team captain, reiterated this stance by stating: “There’s nothing to say about the referee; he tried to do his best.” These statements reflect a conscious attempt by the club to maintain a professional image despite the adverse circumstances.
