A significant change in Madrid's transport
On 28 March, users of the Madrid Metro will face a major change in their daily routine. Line 10, which connects key points in the city, will temporarily close between the Nuevos Ministerios and Cuzco stations. This interruption will last until the end of this year, as part of the works to remodel the Santiago Bernabéu station.
The works, which have surpassed 40% completion, aim to integrate the current infrastructure with the new design that will simply be named ‘Bernabéu’. This project will not only modernise the station but also free up the central axis of the Paseo de la Castellana, currently occupied by heavy machinery. The manager of the Regional Transport Consortium of Madrid (CRTM), Pablo Rodríguez Sardinero, has pointed out that these improvements are essential to facilitate better mobility on this vital artery.
To mitigate the impact of the closure, a special free bus service will be implemented, connecting Nuevos Ministerios with Plaza Castilla. This service will have ten vehicles operating every three to five minutes. Additionally, nearby lines such as 27 and 147 will be reinforced to ensure that users have viable options during this period.
Despite the temporary inconvenience, authorities expect to complete the works in the first quarter of 2027. This will allow not only for a significant modernisation of the service but also for an overall improvement in the user experience when using this crucial line. The intervention includes plans to add new lifts and escalators, thus facilitating more comfortable access for passengers.
From 7 March, traffic restrictions on the Paseo de la Castellana will be lifted, which should significantly improve vehicular circulation. However, it is important to note that there will still be space occupied by trucks related to the internal works at the station.
As Madrid moves towards a more modern and efficient infrastructure, citizens will need to adapt to these temporary changes. With alternatives such as the special bus service and reinforcements on other lines, it is hoped that inconveniences during this critical period will be minimised. Investment in public transport is essential to ensure sustainable and effective mobility in the Spanish capital.
