A special deployment for the New Year's celebration
The arrival of New Year's Eve in Madrid is an event that attracts thousands of people to the city centre, especially to Puerta del Sol, where the traditional bell tolls are celebrated. This significant increase in the number of journeys has led local authorities to implement adjustments to public transport schedules, thus ensuring greater safety and comfort for attendees.
On 31 December, although it is not an official holiday, the Madrid Metro will maintain its usual schedule, closing its doors at 1:30 AM. However, as a preventive measure against the expected large influx, it has been decided that the Sol station will remain closed from 6:00 PM. This decision aims to avoid dangerous overcrowding and facilitate the flow of people to other nearby stations.
Regarding 1 January, coinciding with the start of the new year, the metro will delay its opening until 7:00 AM. During this festive period, a special device will be implemented to reinforce services until 6 January, ensuring that all users can travel easily after the celebrations.
Not only the metro experiences modifications; the Municipal Transport Company (EMT) is also adjusting its schedules. On 31 December, many daytime lines will finish their service earlier than usual, with the last departures scheduled between 9:30 PM and 9:45 PM. On the other hand, daytime buses will resume operations between 7:15 AM and 8:45 AM the following day.
Cercanías Madrid will adopt a schedule similar to that applied during public holidays. It is important to note that on 2 and 3 January, trains will not stop at the Sol station, which may affect those travellers planning to use this line.
Despite these temporary changes, the most important interchanges such as Moncloa, Príncipe Pío, Plaza de Castilla, and Avenida de América will continue to operate without significant alterations. The Plaza Elíptica interchange will have an early closure on 31 December; however, this will not affect the last scheduled departures by the EMT.
As Madrid prepares to bid farewell to this year and welcome the next, it is essential that both residents and visitors are informed about these adjustments. Collaboration between citizens and authorities will ensure safe and memorable celebrations.
