A month of major events in the Spanish capital
The Community of Madrid is gearing up to welcome thousands of visitors in a June that promises to be unforgettable. The Minister of Housing, Transport and Infrastructure, Jorge Rodrigo, has assured that the public transport system will be fully prepared to handle the massive influx expected during this month. The city will not only witness the historic visit of Pope Leon XIV, but will also host a series of concerts by the popular Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny.
Leon XIV will visit Spain from June 6 to 12, starting his tour in Madrid before continuing to Barcelona and the Canary Islands. This trip is significant, as it is the first time in fifteen years that a Pope has set foot on Spanish soil since Benedict XVI visited in 2011, when over a million faithful gathered for World Youth Day.
During his speech at the Madrid Breakfasts organised by Europa Press, Rodrigo highlighted that both the regional government and the City Council are working hand in hand to ensure efficient mobility during these events. “We are giving our all,” he stated, referring to the coordinated plans with the Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Local Administration, Miguel Ángel García. The aim is to provide viable alternatives to facilitate movement for both attendees and residents.
Apart from the religious event, Madrid will pulse with the urban rhythms of singer Bad Bunny. The 6th and 7th coincide with his international tour where he will present his new album Debí tirar más fotos. His performances are expected to draw a crowd to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, adding another layer to the existing logistical challenge.
Despite the excitement for these events, Jorge Rodrigo did not hesitate to criticise certain local political sectors. In particular, he directed his comments towards the government delegate, Francisco Martín, and the mayor of Getafe, Sara Hernández, accusing them of hindering positive initiatives for Madrid. “They should focus on improving public safety,” Rodrigo urged, suggesting that criticism of these events is counterproductive.
In the opinion of the regional minister, these events are not only significant from a cultural or religious standpoint; they also represent an invaluable opportunity to position Madrid on the international stage. “Working together is essential to ensure everything goes well,” concluded Rodrigo, inviting all citizens to actively participate in this unique celebration.
