A total of 157 residents from Cenicientos found shelter last weekend at the Príncipe Felipe sports centre in Majadahonda, after being evacuated due to the advancing fire affecting the Sierra Oeste. The swift response from local authorities, along with the collaboration of various organisations and volunteers, allowed for the provision of food and water to those affected. The Local Police, SERMAJ, and Civil Protection were crucial in the initial response, while the Círculo de Empresarios de Majadahonda also contributed with donations.
Of the evacuees, 97 were able to reunite with family or find accommodation on their own. However, those who could not do so were transferred to Alcalá de Henares following instructions from the Integrated Operational Coordination Centre (CECOPI). Additionally, the Majadahonda Canine Integral Centre (CICAM) offered temporary shelter for affected pets until reaching capacity.
The City Council not only mobilised human resources such as five members of Civil Protection and a 4×4 vehicle equipped with necessary emergency materials, but also made municipal places available at the Valle de la Oliva residence for those who might need them. This action reflects a clear commitment to the safety and well-being of citizens in critical situations.
The solidarity response was remarkable; local taxi drivers offered their services free of charge, while business owners and parishes actively collaborated in the logistics of humanitarian support. The María Auxiliadora school and the Mercadona supermarket also joined this altruistic initiative, providing food and other essential resources for the evacuees. The City Council has expressed its gratitude to all those who participated as volunteers during this critical weekend.
