A tragic Sunday for cyclists in Brunete
The morning of last Sunday turned dark for a group of cyclists enjoying their usual route along the M-600 road, near Brunete. Around 09:30 hours, a car struck seven men, leaving one of them with serious injuries and the other six with varying degrees of wounds.
The incident occurred at kilometer 33.9 of the aforementioned road. According to reports from Emergencias 112, the affected individuals were aged between 25 and 50 years. One of them suffered a severe traumatic brain injury and was airlifted to Hospital Puerta de Hierro. The other six cyclists were taken to different hospitals, with four sustaining moderate injuries and two minor ones.
The driver of the vehicle involved is a 19-year-old young man who also required medical attention due to an anxiety attack following the impact. Authorities have begun an investigation to clarify the causes of the accident, pointing towards a possible human error as a determining factor.
Jorge Rodrigo, the councillor for Housing, Transport and Infrastructure of the Community of Madrid, made statements from Guadarrama this Monday. He stated that the condition of the road was not a contributing factor to the accident: “The road was in perfect condition.” However, he emphasized that the driver seems to have experienced a critical slip by falling asleep at the wheel.
Rodrigo also stressed the importance of taking extra precautions by both drivers and cyclists. In this context, he reminded that the Community is actively working to expand its network of bike lanes to promote safer coexistence between vehicles and bicycles. “We must move forward little by little,” said Rodrigo, acknowledging that Madrid has over 2,500 kilometers of roads.
This incident highlights not only the inherent dangers of the roads but also the urgent need to improve infrastructure to ensure road safety.
